As mobility and accessibility professionals, we are united by our goal of providing essential equipment to improve people’s lives. My transition from clinical work in Ireland to a dealer role with Motion Cares in Canada has offered me unique insights that I aim to share with other representatives.
In this article, I highlight three key lessons from my journey:
Focus on the Person: Understand that for wheelchair users, their chair is crucial for their mobility and freedom. Approach each case with empathy and a solution-oriented mindset, remembering that the wheelchair represents more than just a tool—its symbolizes their gateway to independence and participation. Effective Communication: Reliability is vital. During an urgent case, I found that timely communication was critical. Simple responsiveness can build strong relationships and secure sales, highlighting the importance of being accessible to clients and partners. People-Centered Care: Tailor solutions to individual needs rather than defaulting to standard options. Engage with clients to understand their preferences and how they view their equipment, ensuring that their choices reflect their personality and lifestyle. By embracing these principles, we can enhance our effectiveness and better serve those who rely on our expertise.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding the Importance of the Wheelchair.
- The Importance of Effective Communication.
- Person-Centered Care in a Limited Funding Framework.
