Kids will grow. This is a fact. Kids are also transported in their manual wheelchairs. With these two facts in mind, we need to better balance growth, function, and many other elements when configuring a pediatric manual wheelchair. Doing what has been habitually prescribed should now be challenged. We no longer want to put ‘anything and everything’ that may be needed onto a manual wheelchair base. Especially for the child, this could be causing more harm than good. This course will make you confront your old thinking habits for what is best practice to increase child participation and independence.
Learning Outcomes:
- Recognize with provided examples, two ways growth can be built into a pediatric wheelchair.
- Justify using evidence at least two reasons a young child should be specifically taught wheelchair skills.
- Discuss at least two components that, when properly selected, can help to decrease overall weight of the wheelchair and seating
system.
