Where have we come from and have we done enough? Can we move beyond, and what lies ahead?
These are questions that stand to be answered every day in CRT. But are they? Have we learned from our mistakes and are we standing on the shoulders of those that came before us without looking at the shoulders of those to come? Have we shared our knowledge to help those after us formulate ideas, new trends and garner an embracement of what lies ahead? It is imperative that current practitioners in CRT understand the reasoning behind the MAT Assessment, how to complete such and utilize the data gathered in order to develop a functional prescription with positive outcomes. Postural asymmetries, directional forces and three-point positioning are all important principles to understand and put to use when recommending a seating and wheeled mobility base system. Manual wheelchairs have morphed into “more than four wheels” and provide greater customization in sizing, set up, materials and function. Power mobility is changing the functional outcomes of wheelchair users through the addition of power assist as well as power dynamic seating and standing features. These and other changes are making the way for different outcomes for function and overall occupation of life of our clients. Are you keeping up, and moving forward?

Learning Outcomes:

  • To Understand what data is required from the completion of a MAT Assessment.
  • To list able to describe asymmetry, three-point positioning and counter forces.
  • To review components of sliding and restraint reduction.
  • To review how power assist and dynamic seating components assist with daily functioning.
