One of the challenges with providing power mobility is how to best allow the individual using the equipment to be as independent as possible controlling all functions of the power wheelchair. This is even a greater challenge for individuals with muscle weakness. It is one thing to find the best alternative drive device for someone who has muscle weakness that is stable but if you have a person with a progressive muscle weakness occurring then there are even more challenges. This course will cover the considerations with the population with muscle weakness and considerations for those with progressive muscle weakness as well.
Learning Outcomes:
- The participant will describe three programming options that can extend driving an alternative drive control for individuals with weakness.
- The participant will be able to discuss what proportional controls are beneficial to the population who have muscle weakness.
- The participant will be able to discuss what non-proportional controls are beneficial to the population who have muscle weakness.
