Have you ever watched a client’s posture become more distorted over time despite your best efforts? Posture care management outside of the wheelchair is a powerful concept whose time has come. Well planned postural support in all three human orientations can improve functional outcomes and quality of life for people with limited movement. Supporting symmetrical postures and avoiding destructive ones can protect and restore a person’s body shape, improve sleep, and ease personal care. Posture care management should be considered for every individual with movement problems requiring positioning and mobility equipment. Learn more about this gentle, non-invasive approach!
Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will compare characteristics of healthy and destructive daily postures in lying, sitting and standing.
- Participants will describe how asymmetrical postures, soft tissue adaptation, gravity and time affect the ribcage, spine, pelvis and hips.
- Participants will identify two secondary health conditions associated with distorted body shapes.
- Participants will be aware of safety risks and possible mitigation techniques.
