For years power mobility users have been met with the same design limitations inherent in “me too” power wheelchairs and add-on devices. Difficult environmental access, in both terrain and functional height access, is just a common problem to accept…but do we need to accept that? Imagine…a power mobility device that can reduce the need for home renovations, care giver assistance, while still providing pressure management, reduction in repetitive strain injuries, postural control in all environmental changes, functional activities and mobility. This presentation will review how new and changing power mobility can be a reality for all users as a basic mobility need and right! One should not need to justify basic daily functional activities but instead allow all to live life fully! The goal of this session is to open your mind to defy the ordinary, think outside the box and value that functional mobility can and should be justifiable for all basic functioning in life. We will review the physical characteristics of potential clients as well as the potential functional and physical advantages and justifications for power mobility.
Learning Outcomes:
- To list three advantages of power lateral tilt.
- To describe three advantages to power elevation/lowering in improving functional activity.
- To list three advantages for using power add-on mobility.
