This article explores the clinical, historical, and technological foundations of custom wheelchair seating. It traces the evolution from basic mobility devices to highly specialized systems designed to improve posture, reduce pain, minimize pressure injuries, and slow musculoskeletal deformity progression. Technological innovations—such as 3D scanning, CAD/CAM, and pressure mapping—have enabled precise customization. Research supports the effectiveness of custom-contoured seating in improving function, comfort, and health outcomes, particularly in individuals with neuromuscular disorders. However, challenges such as funding limitations, caregiver training, and system complexity must be considered. The article emphasizes early intervention, individualized design, and interdisciplinary collaboration for optimal results.
Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will be able to identify the general historical development of custom seating.
- Participants will be able to identify three technological advances that have contributed to the development and enhancement of custom seating
- Participants will be able to identify three benefits of custom seating interventions according to research findings.
- Participants will be able to identify at least one each of clinical, environmental and professional considerations before choosing custom seating interventions.
